An honest dry shampoo review

I swear one of the questions I get asked most is, “How do you wash your hair so infrequently?” It’s no secret that I work out a lot so the assumption is I also wash my hair a lot. I don’t. A few years ago I was watching a girl on Instagram talk about how she dried the sweat into her hair after working out 🤢🤔😬 After a few of those faces I was intrigued. She went through the whole process and viola, her hair looked great. I was converted. At the time my hair was pretty long. I’ve always had thick, hard-to-dry hair. The thought of not washing my hair daily sounded wonderful and it was something my hairdresser was also encouraging.

I bought some dry shampoo and went to town. The first couple weeks weren’t pretty 😬 I have naturally oily hair and adding sweat on top of that isn’t the greatest look. I persevered and after a couple weeks I was washing my hair every 5ish days! I tried a few dry shampoos back then but recently I thought why not try some new ones. I mean I don’t have anything else to do during quarantine, right? 🤷🏼‍♀️I’ll also say I was desperately wanting to find a cheaper option. My tried and true and love-of-my-life dry shampoo isn’t cheap so I was on the hunt for something possibly more affordable.

With this need and to help all my gals “The Quarantine Dry Shampoo Test of 2020” commenced. I’ll just go through the list of all the different ones I tried and I’ll rate them out of 10, 10 being the best. Without further ado…..let’s begin.

Dove - Oily Hair For Volume and Fullness $4.88

2 / 10

Ok, with that description “oily hair for volume and fullness” I figured this one was going to be it . It definitely was not. I feel like the oil absorption was good but the smell. Oh. My. Gosh. The smell. Don’t get me wrong, I love a nice smelling dry shampoo but this one was so incredibly strong. Not a lie, I could smell it so strongly on my run the next day I wanted to puke. I’m not a smell sensitive person either and this one knocked me on the floor. Maybe their other dry shampoo varieties are less aggressive? I don’t know but I’m going to nominate someone else to be the guinea pig for those.

Kenra - Volume Dry Shampoo $17.00

4 / 10

I was pretty bummed out about this one. I like a lot of Kenra products and this one just wasn’t for me. I didn’t feel like there was good oil absorption, it’s pretty pricey and there really wasn’t much scent. I feel like you need a little fragrance for a good dry shampoo and this one just wasn’t cutting it.

My Amazing - Extend It Dry Shampoo $13.99

6.5 / 10

I had never heard of this brand but actually wound up really liking this one. There was no insane smell, good oil absorption and it’s pretty affordable! This definitely wasn’t my favorite but it’s a great option for a decently priced one.

Not Your Mother’s - Beach Babe Texturizing Dry Shampoo $5.99

7 / 10

I’m giving this one a better score and one of the main reasons was the size vs. price. This one is super reasonable when it comes to what you get. It was one of the largest ones I purchased (at 7 oz.) and the quality was actually really great. I liked that this one smelled great but wasn’t overpowering. I also appreciate that my hair actually felt cleaner after using it. Overall this is a great, inexpensive option!

Hask - Coconut Dry Shampoo $7.99

7.5 / 10

I’d also never heard of this brand but wound up really liking it and really liking the price! This one also made my hair feel clean and I appreciated the subtle, but great scent. All in all, a solid option.

Bumble & Bumble - Pret-A-Powder $28.00

8.5 / 10

I call this type of dry shampoo the “sprinkle” method. I’ve used a couple different brands that have the sprinkle dry shampoo and I typically like them but I really liked this one! I don’t know why but I always feel like the ones you sprinkle on absorb oil so much better than the aerosol sprays. That’s maybe not accurate but it sure seems like it. This one doesn’t really have too much scent but with the great job it does making the oil disappear it really doesn’t even need it. I’m not convinced that it’s worth $28, verdicts still out on that one. I also think that the loose powder lasts longer than the aerosol cans. I need to do more research 😂

Living Proof - Perfect Hair Day (PhD) $36.00 (jumbo size - 7.3oz)

9.5 / 10

If you’ve been following me for any amount of time you know this is my ride or die. I LOVE THIS STUFF. I wish I didn’t but I just can’t quit you, Living Proof. The oil absorption, the scent, seriously everything I love…..except the price. Good news is that there are plenty of influencers out there (unfortunately not me 😂) that do discount codes with Living Proof and the site does run sales pretty frequently. I only buy this stuff when it’s on sale. Typically the sales are - spend $30ish and get a free dry shampoo. If you do the math - Jumbo size @ $36 plus a free regular size (4 oz) @ $25 you’re getting 11.3oz of dry shampoo for $36, that’s really not bad.

There are still more on the list to try but since I broke the bank buying all the dry shampoo this time I’ll wait a bit. Plus, I think I’m set on dry shampoo until 2021 😜
